5 Simple Ways to Determine LED Polarity

An LED only conducts one way, so a reversed LED simply will not light. This tutorial collects five practical ways to find an LED's polarity - from plain visual inspection to a multimeter or a coin cell - covering loose and SMD parts alike.
It is one of the classic beginner traps in electronics; after reading this you will be able to tell which way any LED goes at a glance.

Why the leads differ
The LED is asymmetric inside: the die sits on the larger lead frame and the cathode leg is shorter
Long leg = positive (anode), short leg = negative (cathode) - the classic rule of thumb
Look inside the package
Look through the epoxy: the side with the bigger frame is the negative
The small cup (reflector) that holds the die is the cathode side
Check the rim
The rim of the package usually has a flat or notched edge - that side is the cathode
This trick works every time on through-hole LEDs
Use a multimeter
Switch to diode-test mode and touch the probes to both legs
If it lights (showing roughly 1.6-3V drop) the red probe is on the anode; if not, swap the probes and try again
Test with a coin cell
Touch a 3V coin cell to the legs - if it lights, you know the orientation
Do not leave it lit for long; an LED straight across a cell has no current limiting and will overheat
