SMD Components Organizer
π Overview
SMD resistors and capacitors are small enough to turn into a tangled mess. This project stores them in test tubes: a laser-cut wooden frame around 3D-printed tube racks, one value per tube, each labelled so you can find the part at a glance.
It is a great storage solution and a nice combined exercise in laser cutting and 3D printing.
π§° What you need
- Clear test tubes (several, to hold SMD parts)
- 3D printer + PLA filament (tube racks and more)
- Laser cutter or panels (wood/acrylic for the frame)
- Label paper / label maker
π§ Step by step
Gather the parts
The tubes need to be wide enough for SMD tape or loose parts
The frame can be entirely 3D printed - laser cutting is not mandatory
Design it
Size the frame and racks around the number of tubes you want
Use a grid layout and plan which cell holds which type of part
Laser cut
Cut the frame and dividers from plywood with slots for press-fit assembly
Match the panel thickness to the slot width - snug but not tight
Print the racks
Print the tube racks that set the tube angle
Watch the print orientation for strength where tubes slide in and out
Assemble
Slot the frame together and drop in the racks
Wood glue or screws are fine - it just needs to be rigid
Label it
Label each tube with the resistance, capacitance, or part value
Put labels both on the tube cap and on the rack position
Sort it out
Order the values from smallest to largest and cut the tape to fit
Put parts back after use and make it a habit
Enjoy the tidiness
Finding a part goes from half an hour to ten seconds
Organising is its own reward
π‘ Tips
- The tube caps should seal to keep moisture and oxidation out - especially in humid climates
- Use a label maker or a waterproof marker; alcohol should not wipe the label off
- Grade by how often you use a value: common parts within reach, rare ones at the back
