3D Printed Snowmobile
π Overview
A 3D-printed snowmobile that can carry a person (or at least cargo): the chassis is entirely printed, the rear section uses printed parts to build a tracked drive, the front is a steering ski, and a motor drives the track over the snow.
The design covers frame, steering, suspension, tracks, and electronics end to end - build one in winter and you will be the star of the snow.
π§° What you need
- DC motor (geared, with plenty of torque) + reduction gear set
- Servo (steering)
- RC radio (receiver + transmitter)
- LiPo pack + ESC/driver
- 608ZZ bearings x4 and assorted 623ZZ bearings
- Lots of 3D-printed parts: chassis, track links, steering parts, suspension, electronics bay (STLs provided by the author)
- Screws, zip ties, heat-shrink and other hardware

Get an overall feel for the track layout and steering logic
Gather the parts
Choose a high-torque geared motor; snow resists a lot
An RC radio set is the easiest and most reliable option
Assemble the rear tracks
Print the track links in batches and string them into a loop
Set the track tension: too tight strains the motor, too loose slips
Build the steering
Steering ski at the front, driven by the servo
Steering on snow differs from wheels - leave room for the ski to slide
Fit the suspension
Printed parts form the suspension that absorbs bumps in the snow
Keep the travel modest and prioritise a stable centre of gravity
Mount the motor and gears
The motor shaft drives the track sprocket through the gear set
Set the gear mesh properly and add grease
Fit the tracks
Loop the tracks over the drive and idler wheels and check for drift
Drift usually means the two tracks are tensioned differently
Join the two halves
Mate the front and rear sections and tighten the chassis screws
Keep the centre of gravity low and central for stability on snow
Wire the electronics
Battery to ESC to motor, and the receiver to the steering servo
Route the wiring along the chassis so it cannot get pulled into the tracks
Paint it (optional)
Spray or wrap the front section to make it look the part
Use primer first - paint sticks better to plastic
Test on snow
Start slowly on packed snow, then build up speed
Cold weather saps battery performance - warm the pack back up when needed
π‘ Tips
- Snow means high friction, so leave margin in both battery capacity and motor torque; the author recommends prioritising torque
- The track module is the hardest part to tune - dry-run it on the bench before heading out into the snow
- Do basic radio range checks on ordinary ground (not snow) first to rule out signal problems
